Famed Investor Warren Buffett Raises $80 Million for Israel Bonds at Omaha Event

An Israel Bond event hosted by Berkshire Hathaway Chairman, President & CEO Warren Buffett in Omaha, Nebraska last week raised over $80 million in Israel bonds investments and intentions to invest, The Jerusalem Post reported.

“I’ve lived through Israel’s entire 70-year history and I believe it is one of the most remarkable countries in the world (…) I’m delighted to own Israel bonds," the billionaire and internationally famous investor and philanthropist said. Buffet remarked that Israel’s independence was “a good day for the world.”

When asked why he’s committed to investing in and for Israel, Buffet stressed the strong bilateral relationship between the United States and Israel, saying the two countries “will always be linked.” He added “I have nothing but good feelings about what I am doing (…) It is a good thing for Israel that there is an America, and it is a good thing for America that there is an Israel.”

The event at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center was attended by over 70 investors from the U.S. and Canada.

Shai Babad, Director General at Israel’s Finance Ministry; Ambassador Danny Danon, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations; and Ambassador Dani Dayan, Consul General of Israel in New York, spoke at the event.

Babad told the attendees, “We just don’t see you as investors, we see you as great friends of Israel,” citing record foreign investment, low unemployment, and consistent GDP growth in Israel.

Netanyahu Meets Latin American Officials, Says He Will Attend Regional Meeting in Guatemala

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with a delegation of chairpersons of foreign affairs committees of Latin American nations on Wednesday and revealed that he will be traveling to Guatemala this November, The Algemeiner reported.

The prime minister will be meeting there with Latin American leaders.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Netanyahu praised the relationship that Israel and Latin American countries have fostered over the years and said “Our relations with the countries of Latin America are obviously changing very rapidly for the better.” He continued, “I’m very proud of the fact that I was the first Israeli prime minister to visit any country south of Texas.”

Guatemala along with Paraguay inaugurated their embassies in Jerusalem last month, following the United States decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Netanyahu applauded Guatemala’s and Paraguay’s initiative and said he hopes other Latin American countries will follow suit. “I’m very glad that Guatemala has moved its embassy. I’m very glad that Paraguay has moved its embassy. And I ask you, as well as being Israel’s ambassadors, to ask your governments to move their embassies to Jerusalem. So we can say, 'Next year in Jerusalem'.”

Earlier this month, Israel was one of the first nations to send aid following the Fuego volcano eruption in Guatemala which has killed over 100 people.

Last year, Netanyahu visited Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.

Israeli Paratroopers Participate in U.S.-Led Exercise in Poland Along with 8 Other Nations

For the first time Israeli paratroopers participated in the United States-led Swift Response military exercise in Poland, alongside eight other U.S. allies, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.

Lt. Lior Hendi told the Post before he and his fellow soldiers returned home to Israel, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us, where we also learned a lot from each other."

The training for the multinational exercise, Hendi said, took two and a half months. The paratroopers also visited the grave of Hannah Senesh on Mount Herzl. Senesh, who is a national hero in Israel, was one of 32 young European Jewish men and women who volunteered for the British to parachute into Nazi Europe. Senesh was caught and executed.

Though admitting to some fear before the exercise, Hendi said, "after all the emotions, the moment I landed I felt that I did something very big, especially since the last time this happened was with Hannah Senesh, who wanted to do so much for the Jewish people. And we closed that circle.”

In addition to Israel and the United States, the 2,300 participating soldiers came from Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

“I was particularly moved to land on Polish soil and to train with my fellow soldiers in the 70th year of the State of Israel, an exercise that demonstrates the strength of cooperation between the IDF and the US Army," Maj. Amir Puri, the commander of the Israeli paratroops, told the Post.

Israeli-Made Water Purification Vehicle Donated to Philippine Red Cross

A made-in-Israel GalMobile, the world’s first water-purification vehicle, was purchased by the Pass It Forward Foundation and donated to the Independent Philippine Red Cross.

“This achievement underscores G.A.L. Water Technologies’ commitment to cleaning water and saving lives,” said Deputy CEO Sigal Levi.

“What started out as a simple solution with the intent of saving lives is signified as one of the leading solutions for supplying clean and safe drinking water in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.”

GalMobile is a self-contained automatic system on a vehicle to provide treatment, storage and distribution of safe drinking water from any water source at World Health Organization standards in less than 30 minutes. The vehicle produces approximately 8,000 cups of water per hour.

In 2015, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs donated one GalMobile to the Marshall Islands and in 2016 donated another to drought-stricken Papua New Guinea.

In 2017, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a demo of the GalMobile near the company’s headquarters in Caesarea. Units are being installed in several arid regions of India.
