In the wake of the Scarlett Johansson-SodaStream-Oxfam brouhaha, one group has found a creative way of thanking the actress for standing up for Israel.
The Israel Project, a self-described "non-profit educational organization that provides factual information about Israel and the Middle East," has created a "Thank you Scarlett" page on its website, where fans can write the actress a message of support.
The page itself includes a message of appreciation, which reads: "Dear Scarlett -- Thank you for standing up for Israel, for peace, and for the truth. You told the anti-Israel bullies they were wrong. Your courage in the face of anti-Israel hate is inspiring. Thank you!"
Johansson recently stepped down as a global ambassador for the human rights group Oxfam – which opposes trade with Israeli settlements – choosing instead to stick with her contract as the face of SodaStream, which has a factory in the West Bank.
The Israel Project followed up its "thank you" page with a Facebook and Twitter campaign featuring various images of the actress and praising her for standing up for peace and bringing people together.
In one, Johansson is pictured with black face paint under one eye, like a football player, and a "peace" tattoo with the Israeli and Palestinian flags. The tag line reads, "Scarlett, you're our Super Bowl MVP."
Another image shows her flanked by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as they all sip soda, using straws, from the same bottle.
The Israel Project campaign has drawn jeers from some left-wing bloggers in Israel and abroad, who claim the group is using the actress to promote Israel's occupation of the Palestinians.
