United Nations war crimes investigators on Wednesday said they had evidence that Syrian government forces were behind a chemical attack that killed dozens of people in Khan Sheikhoun in April. It came after 20 such attacks by the regime over a four-year period, they said.
In the first UN report to officially lay blame for the attack on President Bashar Assad’s military, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said it had gathered an “extensive body of information” showing that Damascus was behind the horrific sarin gas attack in Khan Sheikhoun on April 4 that killed at least 83 people.

Josh Block is a communications, foreign policy and political strategist involved in national politics and policy for nearly 20 years. A former Clinton Administration official & spokesman at the State Department’s USAID, Block got his start on Capitol Hill in the office of Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Democratic politics. A spokesman for the Clinton/Gore and Gore/Lieberman presidential campaigns, Block also worked on House and Senate races, including Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) first campaign for U.S. Senate, the ’96 Presidential Inaugural Committee, and as spokesman at the Ohio Democratic Party.
After nearly a decade on the senior staff of AIPAC, one of Washington’s most respected and effective advocacy organizations, where he was Spokesman and Director of Strategic Communications, Block was appointed Senior Fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute in Washington D.C., and established a strategic consulting practice focused on the intersection of policy, politics and public affairs for international and US-based clients in the public and private sector.
Block was named by Foreign Policy Magazine to its Twitterati 100 list of the most influential foreign policy experts on Twitter (@JoshBlockDC) and The Forward to its list of America’s 50 most influential Jews. When he was appointed CEO and President of The Israel Project, AIPAC President Michael Kassen said, “TIP, as well as the pro-Israel community, will benefit greatly from [Block’s] unique ability to shape the debate and educate both policymakers and the public about Israel and the Middle East.”
Vice President and Director of Israel Office
Lior Weintraub has more than 15 years of experience as a political advisor, spokesman, media strategist and a diplomat. He started his professional life as a journalist in Jerusalem, then spent 5 years in various positions in the Knesset. Lior then joined the Israeli Foreign Service and, after completing the prestigious diplomat’s course, served on the Middle East economic affairs desk and in New Delhi, India. Between 2008-2012 Lior served in Washington DC as chief of staff for 2 ambassadors and later as the spokesman of the embassy.
After 10 years, Lior left public service and joined BBDO Israel as a VP and established a consulting practice. Between 2014 and Jan 2016 Lior was the CEO of She’arim – an advocacy organization committed to bringing a strategic change in Israeli society by advancing Jewish pluralism. Since 2012, Lior has been a lecturer at The Interdisciplinary Center in Hertzlia. Lior appears frequently in Israeli media as a U.S.-Israel relationship commentator.
Lior holds a bachelor degree in political science and international relations from the Hebrew University and a MA degree in political communication from Tel Aviv University.
Chief of Staff
In his capacity as Chief of Staff, Ian Sugar helps manage The Israel Project’s Washington office, working on cross-departmental project management and coordination across the organization’s multiple platforms and divisions. He also leads TIP’s external affairs and development operations.
A veteran political operative, strategist, and fundraiser, Ian joined TIP three years ago. Before joining TIP, he was Deputy Political Director at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, and in 2012 was Shelley Berkley’s Nevada Finance Director for her US Senate campaign. Prior to his years in Las Vegas, Ian consulted in Washington for some of the country’s top elected officials at Berger Hirschberg Strategies. He cut his teeth in politics during the 2008 Presidential election, and went on to help elect Suzanne Kosmas to Congress in November of that year. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Ian graduated from Boston University in 2007.
Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer
Marybeth Long is responsible for all finance, accounting, budgeting, and reporting activities for TIP, both in DC and in Israel. As head of the organization’s Finance department, Long is also involved in supporting financial presentations. Long has three decades of experience in the finance and management arena, including consulting at the National Retail Federation; working as the Director of Accounting at the American Psychiatric Association; Controller at Metropolitan Development LLC; Accounting Manager at Sunrise Living; and Controller at Hines corporation, a major real estate development and management company; as well as in senior finance-related positions for other top corporate and non-profit organizations, including the National Automobile Dealers Association and the Rubber Manufacturers Association.
Long is a Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of George Mason University.

Omri Ceren oversees TIP’s news monitoring, research, and digital outreach efforts. Ceren appears regularly as a guest analyst on cable and radio news programs, commenting on geopolitical and geostrategic affairs. He is a PhD candidate in Communication at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication.
