- Former intelligence heads call Egypt a counterweight to Islamic-Iran

| Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is currently on a four-day visit to Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. Analysts believe Turkey’s actions vis-à-vis Israel and its growing interest in the Arab Middle East is part of what an American diplomat termed Turkey’s “new, highly activist foreign policy.” |
Jerusalem, Sept. 12 - Top Israeli leaders, former intelligence chiefs and military heads, unanimously expressed support for Israel’s relations with Egypt and Turkey at a counter-terrorism conference Sunday (Sept. 11). The Arab Spring, they agreed, makes Israel’s ties to Egypt and Turkey essential—particularly if the movements coalesce into an ‘Islamic Winter,’ referring to the idea that extremist Islam could potentially fill the vacuum created if people are left frustrated and disappointed after the Arab Spring.
Israel has maintained peaceful ties with Egypt since 1979, when then Egyptian president Anwar al-Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin signed a comprehensive peace treaty.
Danny Yatom, former head of the Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence agency, said that while each country in the Middle East is different there is a domino-effect in the region. “Israel must do all it can to preserve peace with Egypt,” Yatom explained, which could mean agreeing to Egypt’s deployment of more forces in Sinai and strengthening the Egyptian-Israeli border. Washington, Sept. 9 - As Americans commemorate the 9/11 attacks on our country 10 years ago, Israel will share in the remembrance of the day’s horrors and heroism.
From the designer of the new memorial at Ground Zero to the ceremonies expected at Israel’s own 9/11 memorial in Jerusalem, the Israeli participation in a weekend of commemoration adds a poignant dimension to the close U.S.-Israel bilateral relationship.
“America’s agony was intensely felt by Israelis,” Israeli ambassador to the United States Michael Oren wrote in an op-ed Sept. 9. “Though we had long known the trauma wrought by terror and had grappled with its grief, the 9/11 attacks were unique in their scope and devastation." [more]
Washington, Sept 8 – The Israel Project will launch a new website early next week that will make it easier for readers to search and access information and customize their browsing experience.

The new site will launch on or around Sept. 12. Viewers will see a more streamlined design and a new look that will make the site easier to navigate and more user-friendly. It should work across all web browsers with an enhanced ability to communicate across social media. The homepage address will remain the same: www.theisraelproject.org.
“We have a wealth of information on our site in the form of press kits, photos, videos, graphics, maps, press releases and background information compiled over several years, making The Israel Project one of the best resources on the Internet for unbiased facts and primary source material on Israel and the Middle East,” said Alan Elsner, TIP’s Executive Director for the Americas.
