The Iran-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah launched 3,970 rockets into more than two dozen northern Israeli cities and towns during the summer 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict, also referred to as the Second Lebanon War. Approximately 900 rockets landed in urban areas. There were 2,015 civilians reported injured and 43 killed by the barrage of rockets fired into northern Israel by Lebanon-based Hezbollah guerrillas during the 34-day war. [1]   


Following are details about the towns significantly affected by Iran-sponsored Hezbollah rocket attacks from July 12-Aug. 12, 2006: 

Afula

Total number of rockets that hit Afula: More than 12

History: Located in the lower Galilee region, the ancient city of Afula is roughly halfway between Jenin and Nazareth. The modern community of Afula was founded in 1925 by American Jewish immigrants. Today Afula is a growing city of 43,000 people, including more than 15,000 new immigrants - almost 11,000 from the former Soviet Union and another 4,000 from Ethiopia.

Akko

Total number of rockets that hit Akko: 106

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 6

  • July 26: Bakir Kurdi, 63, suffers a heart attack and dies during a rocket attack on the city of Akko.
  • Aug. 3: Shimon Zaribi, 44; his daughter Mazal Zaribi, 15; Albert Ben-Abu, 41;  Ariyeh Tamam, 41; and Amos Tiran Tamam, 31, are killed by Hezbollah rockets.

Arab al-Aramshe

Background: Arab al-Aramshe is a Bedouin village near the Israel-Lebanon border.

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 3

  • Aug. 5: Fadiya Juma'a, 58, and her daughters, Samira, 30, and Sultana, 25, are killed in the courtyard of their home.

Beit She'an

Beit She'an is located just north of the Jordan Valley and east of Jenin. The city is known for its ancient historical sites, including numerous significant archeological ruins discovered throughout the 20th century. Artifacts from at least 18 ancient towns have been found in Beit She'an.

Beit She'an is one of the furthest cities from the Israel-Lebanon border hit during the war.

Rockets struck between the Arab West Bank villages of Fakua and Jalboun, close to Beit She'an. Hezbollah claimed the rockets that traveled this far were Iranian-made.

Dir el-Asad

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 2

  • Aug. 10: Mariam Assadi, 26, and her son Fathi Ahmed, 5, are killed when their home sustains a direct hit by a Katyusha rocket.

Haifa

Total number of rockets that hit Haifa: 54. Many more fell outside the city.

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 16

  • July 16: A rocket hits a Haifa train depot, killing Reuvan Levi, 43; Danis Lapidos, 24; Shmuel Ben Shimon, 41; Nisim Elhariri, 43; Asa'el Damti, 39; David Feldman, 28; Sholomi Mansura, 35; and Rafi Hazan, 30.
  • July 23: Habib Isa Awad, 48, is killed when a rocket hits his shop outside of Haifa. Shimon Glikblich, 60, is also killed on a road near Haifa when a rocket hits his car.
  • July 25: David Mazen, 75, suffers a heart attack during a rocket strike and dies two weeks later.
  • Aug. 5: Frida Kellner, 87, dies of a heart attack as she attempts to take cover during a rocket attack.
  • Aug. 6: Labiba Mazawi, 67; Hanna Hamam, 62; and Ronny Robinsky, 30, from Kiryat Motzkin are killed when a rocket hits their building. Dr. Tamara Lucca, 84, dies of a heart attack when a rocket hits nearby.

Karmiel

Total number of rockets that hit Karmiel: 176

Kibbutz Sa'ar

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 1

  • Aug. 2: David Martin Lelchook, 52, dies when he is directly hit by a rocket while riding his bike.

Kiryat Shmona

Total number of rockets that hit Kiryat Shmona: Over 1000

On June 18, 2007 three rockets are launched from Lebanon, hitting Kiryat Shmona. A Palestinian terrorist organization situated in southern Lebanon was responsible for the attacks. The Palestinian terrorist organization used rockets supplied by Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Ma'alot-Tarshiha

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 3

  • Aug. 3: Muhammad Faour, 17, Sinati Sinati, 21, and Amir Naeem, 18, are killed by Katyusha rockets fired by Hezbollah.

Majdal Krum

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 2

  • Aug. 4: Bahaa al-Din Kareim, 35, and Muhammed Mana, 24, are killed in their village by a Katyusha rocket.

Moshav Meron

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 2

  • July 14: Yehudit Itzkovich, 57, and Omer Pesachov, 7, are killed by a Katyusha rocket.

Mughar (Maghar)

Background: Mughar has a mixed population of 60 percent Druze, 20 percent Christian and 20 percent Muslim residents. The northern town is home to many enlisted and reserve duty Druze Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and Israeli Police officers.

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 2

  • July 25: Doua Abbas, 15, is killed when a rocket strikes the roof of her Mughar home.
  • Aug. 4: Manal Azzam, 27, is killed when a rocket lands in Mughar.

Nahariya

Total number of rockets that hit Nahariya: 808

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 2

  • July 13: Monica Seidman, 40, is killed when a Hezbollah rocket hits her bedroom.
  • July 18: Andrea Zalinsky, 36, is killed by a Hezbollah rocket.

Nazareth

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 2

  • July 19: Rabia Taluzi, 3, and his brother Mahmoud, 7, are killed by a Katyusha rocket.

Tiberias

Total number of rockets that hit Tiberias: 81

Tzfat (Safed)

Total number of rockets that hit Tzfat (Safed): 471

Total deaths from rocket attacks: 1

  • July 13: Nitzan Rubin, 33, dies from wounds sustained during a Hezbollah rocket attack.
