Abba Eban

Born Aubrey Solomon Eban, Abba Eban was a prominent and important Israeli diplomat and politician from the nascence of the state, until the end of the 20th century. Speaking perfect English with a British accent, many consider him Israel’s greatest diplomat and representative of Israel to the world.

Eban served as the first UN liaison officer for the Jewish Agency for Palestine and later led Israel’s delegation to the UN. During that time, he was instrumental in lobbying the UN for Resolution 181, creating the partition for a Jewish and Arab state in Palestine. He continued his position at the UN throughout the 1950’s, while simultaneously serving as Israel’s ambassador to the United States.

Later, from 1966-1974, Eban took the post of Israel’s foreign minister. He spent the rest of his political career in the Knesset with the Labor Party and was always an advocate of giving up land for peace. In 2001, the Israeli government awarded Eban the Israel Prize, Israel’s highest honor.

Eban was born in South Africa and moved to England at a young age. He graduated from Cambridge University with honors. He is the author of several books, including My People: The Story of the Jews, My Country, Personal Witness: Israel Through My Eyes and Heritage: Civilization and the Jews.
