Jerusalem, April 18 – Israel warned Wednesday there is a danger that the Iranians will continue to con the world and carry on developing nuclear weapons.
“We see that the Iranians have not gotten the message of the international community and they continue to defy the demands and continue to defy any norms of civil and international conduct,” Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told reporters at a press briefing organized by The Israel Project.
Iran is under international economic and trade sanctions for its violation of four United Nations Security Council resolutions, refusing to halt the enrichment of uranium and refusing to open secret nuclear facilities to international inspection. The International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear power watchdog, concluded that some of Iran’s nuclear development could only be used for nuclear weapons.
“We have to remember that the situation at this point is that Iran is in a flagrant breach of numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions,” Ayalon said. “Nothing has changed and this is something we want to point out. Certainly the danger is that the Iranians will continue to con the world as they have been.”
Ayalon also called on the Palestinians to return to direct peace negotiations. “If they came to the table they would find a real partner for peace – a real partner for moving forward,” he said. “It’s not a zero-sum game between us and the Palestinians. It’s a win-win situation for all of us.”
Ayalon also said Israel was following developments in Egypt and that the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty was vital for the region.
“We just hope and wish for the people of Egypt that they will shape their future in the best possible way. We wish them all the best,” he said. “It’s very important for us to have a prosperous, stable, democratic Egypt. They will always find us as a partner.”
