Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich, Head of International Media & Communications Branch, IDF Spokespersons Unit
Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich is the highest-ranking spokesperson for the Israel Defense Force's (IDF) foreign press branch. She is responsible for providing information to Israel-based press from around the world about issues ranging from terrorist groups in the Palestinian territories to the defensive war Israel fought against Iran-backed Hezbollah. As a spokesperson, Leibovich has been closely involved in the IDF's efforts to protect Israel from Hamas-perpetrated violence in Gaza.
Lt. Col. Leibovich also served as spokesperson for the IDF's Northern Command from 2002-2005, during which time she dealt with regional and international media following the withdrawal from Lebanon. She initiated a variety of projects in the north and guided international delegations and government representatives including members of U.S. Congress.
From 1999-2002, Lt. Col. Leibovich was Coordinator of International Organizations for Dover Tzahal, the IDF Spokespersons Unit. Before that, Lt. Col. Leibovich was head of the advocacy department in the IDF’s Foreign Relations and Liaison Division where she planned and coordinated public relations and advocacy events for UN peacekeeping forces stationed in Israel and other parts of the Middle East.
Lt. Col. Leibovich holds a bachelor's degree in English literature and political science from Israel's Bar Ilan University and a master's degree in international relations from the University of Haifa. She is married and has three children.
